Birds Bay Drive, Tweed Heads West, NSW

Emerald Dove, Yandina, Qld. (Chalcophaps longirostris rogersi) © Maggie Overend

Just across the NSW border in Tweed, this walk is mostly shaded and offers nice breezes to beat the summer heat. This site has a mixture of bush and waterbirds. Pacific Emerald Dove are commonly reported and there has even been a rare sighting of a Shining Flycatcher in October 2025!

There are no toilets on-site. If duty calls, please see https://toiletmap.gov.au.

Optional Post-walk: the tides will be high at 8am and will be receding by the time we finish our walk. It will be worth checking out Pioneer Park for some waders afterwards.

Directions: The entrance to Birds Bay Dr is off Scenic Dr TWEED HEADS WEST, however, it is narrow and hard to find (we won’t be meeting there). Navigate to the Seagulls Sports Club entrance off Gollan Dr. Once you enter the carpark turn right towards driving to the back of the building (towards the Tabatinga signage). You will reach a large carpark with a small park along the water. We will be waiting here.
