Golds Scrub Lane, Lake Samsonvale, Mount Samson

Australian Painted Snipe (Rostratula australis) © Peter Storer

Lake Samsonvale is the property of Seqwater, the local water authority. The lake is situated north west of Brisbane in the Samford / Dayboro area. The area has various good birding spots and Golds Scrub Lane is one of the better known locations and highly productive in number of species.

The walk will commence at the car park next to the cemetery end of Golds Scrub Lane at 07:00 a.m. Thursday. We have a BQ members Access Deed allowing access to Seqwater catchment at Lake Samsonvale. We will firstly visit the shoreline near the car park to see a variety of waterbirds: Little Black Cormorants , Black Swans, Great Crested Grebes and Coots which can occur in huge numbers . Bring a scope if have one please. After viewing the lake we will visit bushland, expect to catch a view of honeyeaters, fairy wrens and whistlers. Several species of raptor can be observed at Samsonvale.  King Quail are possible if we are lucky.

The UBD reference is MAP 86 F 11. Or, from Brisbane, take the Samford Road through Ferny Grove onto Samford Village. At the roundabout before the village turn right into Main Street then follow Mount Samson Road for about 13 km. Turn right into Gold’s Scrub Lane. Bring morning tea, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitiser and please wear walking boots or trainers as the grass can be thick and wet, the tracks rough and some residents venomous. Nearest toilet facilities are in Main Street Samford.

Please email or telephone me if attending in advance of the date as access may change if Seqwater are working in the area and I may have to contact you.
