Wynnum Boardwalk & Lytton Wader Roost

A pair of Torresian kingfishers (Todiramphus sordidus) © Cameron Davidson

The last BQ walk at this site was in April 2023 so why not start off
2025 with a visit to Wynnum Boardwalk. It is always an
interesting walk along the mangrove boardwalk whether at low or
high tide and in the adjoining bush areas the trees provide some
relief from the heat. Low tide is at 6.04 a.m. on the morning of
the walk so we could see waders out on the mud flats when we
arrive at the lookout at the end of the boardwalk. This site usually
provides views of Mangrove Gerygone and Torresian Kingfisher
but there can be surprises including cuckoos. A family of Greycrowned
Babblers has been regularly seen at the site so we will
be on the lookout for them. Due to the tides, we are unlikely to
see any waders at the roost area, but it is always worth a look.
The birds which have been seen recently at the site can be found
on eBird at http://ebird.org/ebird/australia/hotspot/L1177500.
We will meet at the Mangrove Boardwalk southern car park in
Elanora Park at 6.30 a.m. Vehicular access to the park is on the
corner of Granada and Crown Streets, Wynnum, and then
following the road through the park to the designated parking
area. There are toilets in Granada Street (before entering the
park) but none at the Boardwalk or Roost areas. Please bring
insect repellent, sunscreen, water, a chair and morning tea.
If you are planning to come, please email me.
