We are venturing into the wonderful Scenic Rim area for this full day outing. During the outing, we will explore some interesting sites in and around Boonah where you could see Zebra Finch, Grey-crowned Babbler, a variety of other bush and water birds and birds of prey.
This is a full day outing and will involve some travel between the various sites that have been selected so will be limited to 40 participants. Please book by emailing or phoning Rae Clark.
As with other areas in the south-east, there has been rain and creeks and rivers are swollen but we expect that with a drier winter, it will be more settled. Your outing leaders recently had a day out to check sites and decide on where to go on the day. Even with some sites around the Wyaralong Dam closed due to the water level, we saw 86 species including Zebra Finch, Little Bronze Cuckoo and Azure Kingfisher.
It is intended to visit the Wharkuroogma Nursery at Obum Obum which has an impressive bird list before travelling on to Boonah with a stop at the Boonah-Kalbar Water Treatment Plant where we hope to see Zebra Finch. Boonah will be our lunch stop and the local bakery apparently makes great pies – according to Paul and Scott – so you will have an opportunity to buy lunch. We will have lunch in a park nearby and this park also has some interesting birds.
In the early afternoon, we will visit Knehr Road which is on the Wyaralong Dam which also has an impressive species list. If time permits, we will visit another site on the Dam – Lillybrook Camping Area – before returning to Peak Crossing.
To explore the birds which could be seen at the sites we plan to visit, eBird links are as follows:

Carpooling: We propose offering carpooling from the Peak Crossing meeting place. Could you please advise if you would like to carpool and whether you can take others with you or would like to travel with someone else. Please be aware that we will not be returning to Peak Crossing until the end of the outing so take this into consideration when making your decision.
Meeting Place: Because we will be travelling on some possibly unfamiliar country roads, it has been decided to meet at a picnic area (with facilities) at Peak Crossing – Peak Mountain View Park – which will be on the left as you travel south on the Ipswich-Boonah Road coming off the Cunningham Highway at Yamanto. Meeting time at Peak Crossing is 7.30 a.m. For those travelling on the Cunningham Highway, take the Yamanto exit and then take the Ipswich-Boonah Road. Peak Mount View Park is on the left, 14km from the Yamanto Exit. GPS -27.779543, 152.732326
We do have some copies of a map of the Scenic Rim area which will be made available at the meeting place. GPS coordinates for the various sites will also be provided.
Please bring morning tea, lunch, water and a chair plus sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer and a hat. Closed in footwear is recommended. Average temperatures in Boonah in July range from 5C to 21C.
