Peach Trees is in Jimna State Forest approximately 150km north of Brisbane. Over the years there have been beautiful birds here eg Regent Bowerbirds, hopefully we will find good birds this time. BBButton Quail use to be there, we had an unproven sighting last year as it disappeared into the undergrowth. Yabba Creek runs beside the park and platypus are quite often seen.
The National Park camp site is well kept with 2 toilet blocks but no showers. Please bring drinking water as the tap water is from the creek. You will need to book a campsite through the National Park website. There is Optus reception but not Telstra! (no I didn’t get that back to front!). There is a QldParks Wi-fi hotspot, with dubious reception. Campsites are not numbered. I plan to camp at the far end near the second toilet block. If you have firewood lying around your house it would be good to bring for our evening fire.
Directions: from Brisbane make your way to Woodford and then Kilcoy, either along the M1 towards Caboolture, taking exit 152B, D’Aguilar Hwy.. After 48kms you can exit before Kilcoy using Winya Rd to join the Kilcoy Murgon Rd or go through Kilcoy and turn right onto Kilcoy Murgon Rd. .After 42 kms (a few more if via Kilcoy) turn right onto Yabba Rd, 2kms further turn right again and another 2.5km a sharp left onto Peach Trees access road. If coming from the Sunshine Coast there is a back 4WD road, Mcaulays Rd, passing Charlie Moreland camping area and on to Jimna.
Friday afternoon 3pm we will walk around the camping area and possibly a track around Yabba Creek, depending on which tracks have been reopened after the storm damage over 12 months ago. Sat we will take morning tea and leave the park and drive towards Yabba Rd – a wonderful birding spot with a couple of bonus stops along the way, Saturday afternoon we will walk part of Yabba Creek circuit and Sunday morning we will walk the lovely Eugenia circuit which goes around part of Yabba Creek, the first part climbing up a little and overlooking the creek.
An sms or email to either leader would be appreciated so we know who is attending.
