Bird identification can be difficult, even for experienced birders, and many discussions occur during group walks and camps on this subject.

Short Talk

Nicola Sockhill – Level-up urban conservation by increasing vegetation complexity

Urban greenspaces act as sanctuaries for many bird species, so effective management is crucial to conservation outcomes, but decision-making is not always based on scientific evidence.

Based on citizen science (eBird) data, Nicola will describe research into the influence of vegetation complexity on the composition of bird species within urban greenspaces in Brisbane.  The research investigated how greenspaces can support bird diversity, for both city-wide and tailored species management, as well as how key management strategies affect birds in urban greenspaces.  This was found to be incongruent with traditional urban conservation strategies.

Long Talk

Nikolas Haass – Tubenoses in the Coral Sea off Queensland – identification, abundance and phenology

In his talk Nikolas will focus on the tubenoses in the Coral Sea off Queensland.  He will give a comprehensive overview of all species documented in Queensland waters and comment on their abundance and phenology: many species occur regularly in the area but in different seasons, others are uncommon to rare visitors, and some are vagrants.  He will also provide guidance on their identification.  Finally, he will turn to the fun part of the presentation: a tubenose ID quiz!
