Short Talk
Felicity Charles – How does fire history influence critical feed trees of the vulnerable Glossy Black Cockatoo?
Fire plays a role in the evolution of plants and animals, but contemporary fire regime changes are causing declines in biodiversity. Biodiversity patterns are driven by complex feedback cycles between the environment, fire regimes, species traits, and life history parameters. These cycles are well studied at community and population levels, but less is known about how fire influences, and is influenced by, specialised plant-animal interactions where a single genus depends on one to two genera in a single family of plant or animal. Felicity will explain how her research tackled this knowledge gap by focusing on the dietary specialist Glossy Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus lathami (Cacatuidae), which feeds solely on seeds of she-oak trees (Casuarinaceae).
Long Talk
David Edwards – WWW – WadersWorldWide, plus something local!
David’s talk will have a fun/serious look at the wader family worldwide, then home in on what the Queensland Wader Study Group has done locally.
