Short Talk

Lyanne Brouwer – The ecology of the Black-throated Finch.

With the decline of its former range by more than 80% since the 1970’s, the Southern Black-throated Finch (Poephila cincta cincta) is listed as endangered. Much is unknown about the life-history, movement and space use of these finches. This hampers efforts to manage the subspecies and protect it from further threats. Lyanne’s presentation will include information on a monitoring program carried out on the Townsville coastal plains to study movement and breeding biology of Southern Black-throated Finches. The program will provide detailed insights about space use across the landscape and over time, which is critical to the design of management plans.

Long Talk

Andrew Ley – Birds Queensland in the Channel Country, 2013-2024.

Andrew has been visiting the Channel Country since 1994. Surveys have centred around four major national parks in the area: Diamantina, Bladensburg, Welford and Idalia. Since 2013, 11 Birds Queensland expeditions to the area has made a major contribution to this data collection. Andrew and his colleagues have published the findings in 19 papers and notes in the literature, with more to come.
