The relevant Qld Government deparments are presenting a webinar addressing the role that birdwatchers can play.
As you are likely already aware, Biosecurity Queensland has confirmed the recent detection of H5 bird flu in Queensland.
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) is supporting Biosecurity Queensland’s ongoing response, and is working with our partners and permit holders with a focus on early detection, reducing biosecurity risks and protecting vulnerable native species.
DETSI will be hosting a webinar this week to discuss the important role of the birdwatchers network in monitoring for H5 avian influenza (bird flu) in Queensland.

The webinar will be led by DETSI Bird Flu Preparedness Coordinator Graham Hemson, with input from Senior Conservation Officer Threatened Species Operations Dr Brendan Doohan.
This is an opportunity to learn more about what to look out for when observing birds in the wild, what to do if you come across sick or dead birds, and how to keep yourselves safe.
DETSI will endeavour to record the session for future viewing.
We all have a role to play in helping with surveillance for this disease. If you see sick or dead wild birds or wildlife, remember:
- Avoid contact.
- Record what you observe.
- Report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
