The Sunbird is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Queensland Ornithological Society Incorporated (Birds Queensland).

Article details will only be shown under one of two conditions:

  1. when the search results in a relatively small number of articles or birds, or
  2. if you click on a bird name.

Notes

Common-name fragments may be given in any order: “tai cockat yel” will find yellow-tailed black cockatoo. The fragments are only matched against the start of each word, so “ellow” won’t find anything. Scientific name fragments, on the other hand, must be given in genus, species order.

Hyphenation is ignored: “bronze-cuckoo” will find “bronze cuckoo”. Note: This does not work for species where the IOC has merged names: for example, birds formerly known by the name fairy-wren are now fairywren, so searching for “wren” will find emu-wrens but not fairywrens.

One point to remember is that the original index was created purely on common name; the scientific names are not necessarily what was used in the article, but reflect more recent matching against the common name. Common names and scientific names have changed substantially during the life of the journal; this index attempted initially to use the common name as defined in IOC version 10.1. A few of the less obvious old usages have been cross-referenced here, but it might not always be obvious which species or subspecies an article is referring to.
In mid 2023, the list was partly updated to reflect IOC v13.1, however you might find inconsistencies, so be prepared to search flexibly.

Occasional errors arise when two articles share a page number – if the bird appears on that page then it might be attributed to the wrong article. However selecting the link will still give a PDF with the page containing the bird in question.

Only a small number of birds are indexed at the subspecies level, even when articles are about such birds. The IOC master list does not assign common names to any subspecies. However, for the purposes of this search, the database has been assigned a small number from Birdlife Australia’s Working List of Australian birds, in cases where species names agree: for example Capricorn Silvereye and Southern Star Finch. When using genus species search terms it will generally not help to include a subspecies – the species level birds are always included even if a subspecies is given.

A word fragment is any string of characters bounded by spaces or commas. Each fragment is searched separately and all parts must match somewhere in a title to display a result: for example, searching for “red hawk” will return matches where the article title contains “red Goshawk” as well as for “Collared Sparrowhawk“
