Bird identification can be difficult, even for experienced birders, and many discussions occur during group walks and camps on this subject.

Changing Mountain Bushland Reserve, Kholo

Rufous Fantail, Sandy Camp Wetlands, Qld (Rhipidura rufifrons rufifrons) © Graham Donaldson

Changing Mountain Reserve is a peaceful reserve in the west of Brisbane with a good range of bushland birds, including some regionally quite scarce species. Its peace and quiet make it an ideal location for a bird walk, as we will again be paying particular attention to bird calls. It is largely eucalypt woodland, similar to nearby reserves, but the eastern section of the reserve has been partially cleared. This section used to be a farm and was purchased by BCC; it is now regenerating.

There are several entrances to the reserve, so participants need to take care to find the location where the bird walk will start, which is opposite 151 Lake Manchester Road. There is no signpost for the reserve.

Directions: The start of the walk is opposite 149 Lake Manchester Road, at the beginning of the Lynch Track (not signposted). Parking is on the west side of the road: on the left coming from Brisbane, or on the right coming via Kholo. The GPS coordinates are 27.516, 152.807. Another marker is that it is about 1 kilometre south of Swensons Road. There is off-road parking here for approximately 12–15 vehicles. It would also be possible to park on the side of Lake Manchester Road.

There are no facilities at Changing Mountain Reserve. The nearest public toilets are at Lake Manchester, Anstead Bushland Reserve or Colleges Crossing, which are all about a ten-minute drive away. Please bring drinking water and morning tea. A hat and sunscreen are recommended. The walk is grade 2, with a couple of moderate inclines.
