Bird identification can be difficult, even for experienced birders, and many discussions occur during group walks and camps on this subject.

Short Talk

Christopher Johnson – Road Ecology

Chris will take us into the field of road ecology, examining the current situation of bird-related issues. He will present some of his own research findings aimed at addressing existing gaps. This includes introducing the ‘Roads4Wildlife’ framework which offers a structured approach to investigating wildlife interactions with roads.

Chris will also discuss ongoing projects, such as exploring the application of fauna-sensitive road design guidelines within Australian government policies, and a methodology for calibrating audio recorders for field use. These aim to advance road ecology and provide practical solutions to mitigate the impact of roads on bird populations.

Long Talk

Lola Lange – Ecoacoustic monitoring of the endangered Pink Cockatoo in semi-arid Eastern Australia: insights into spatial and temporal patterns

The Pink Cockatoo (Lophochroa leadbeateri) is an iconic bird species inhabiting semi-arid and arid Australia.  The eastern subspecies, L.leadbeateri leadbeateri, is nationally listed as endangered.  However, the ecological requirements and population dynamics of this species remain poorly understood.  This species faces numerous threats, including habitat loss and climate change, therefore a comprehensive understanding of their ecology and behaviour is imperative for effective conservation.

Lola will discuss her research process and how it aims to address this knowledge gap.
