 Planning Tips for Birders

  • Fly/Drive: Many birders fly into Mount Isa and hire a 4WD. While major sites are accessible via sealed roads, a 4WD is recommended for reaching the best spots along the Gregory River or deeper into the spinifex ranges.

Based on the latest local fuel reports, prices are hovering around $2.16 to $2.49 per litre for Unleaded 91 and $3.21 to $3.39 per litre for Diesel. For the most accurate, up-to-the-minute pricing, please refer to the live map here: https://petrolspy.com.au/map/latlng/-20.695692783898807/139.3904536837357

Transportation

Recommended Driving Route

The following route follows the Barkly Highway west from Cloncurry toward Mount Isa, hitting the most productive “hotspots” identified last winter.

Stop Location Key Birding Highlights
1. Chinaman’s Creek 2.5km west of Cloncurry Black-necked Stork, Spinifex Pigeon, and Pictorella Mannikin.
2. Corella Dam 55km west of Cloncurry Huge numbers of Little Corellas, Apostlebirds, and resident Pheasant Coucals.x`x`

Route & Travel Tips

  • Access: Entrance to Corella Dam is via a 2km–3km dirt track off the south side of the Barkly Highway. While accessible by most 2WD vehicles in the dry season, high-clearance is recommended for the tracks around Rosebud Dam.
  • Camping: Clem Walton Park offers free bush camping with basic facilities (toilets, bins).

Safety: Be mindful of private property gates; always leave them as you found them. Crocodiles have been occasionally spotted in the Corella Dam area, so stay alert near the water’s edge.
